Who We Are (contributors)

Scott Tanguay (Tanguay Custom Knives)

Scott's experiences as an avid outdoorsman, combat veteran, and electrical and mechanical technician have proved to him the importance of ALWAYS carrying a quality, reliable knife. "A knife is a tool, and I believe in getting the best tool you can afford so it won't let you down when you need it most." Scott is definitely a hands on kind of guy, and he know tools. He has worked around heavy equipment and machinery all his life. He has been a sailor, machinist, welder, millwright, instruments and controls technician, power plant operator, cogeneration power plant supervisor, and a natural gas compressor station manager.

Scott made his first knife back in 1982 while attending classes for Machine Technology. He started Tanguay Custom Knives with the sole intent of putting quality, reliable, and affordable knives in the hands of the working men and women who need them. Hundreds of working class individuals, outdoorsman, law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel, sailors, soldiers, Marines, and airmen are carrying one of his knives. He listens to their feedback, and is constantly making improvements. He is bringing that experience here, to Downeast Knife Company.

Lamont Coombs Jr. (Coombs Handmade)

Lamont sold his first knife in 1988 at the age of 18, and has been making knives as his full time occupation since 1998. He has worked as a machinist, a driver's ed instructor, and owned his own concrete business before selling it to become a full time knifemaker. He has had his knives published in several books and magazines over the years, to name a few:

* Blade Magazine,
* Knives Illustrated,
* Knifeworld, Knives 93 and 2005
* The Art of the Knife, 2008, the coffee table book

He makes primarily high end knives for sportsmen and collectors, but his true love is making art grade Bowies and Fighters. These art knives have made him very popular on the show circuit in New England. Lamont is always trying to learn more, and his goal in life is to some day "sole authorship" a custom art knife. He states, "Whether it be a custom high end art knife worth thousands of dollars, or a rugged belt knife that you'll wear and use daily, my experience and talent can produce a knife that you'll cherish for years to come."

Lamont says, "At Downeast Knife Company, we'll be catering to the knife User. The person who wants something just a bit more personalized than a full production knife."

Shawn Box (Box Family Website)

Born in Maine, Shawn has excelled in his chosen field. He and his wife, Mandy, met at the University of Maine at Farmington. After making the conscience decision to remain in Maine, rather than taking various job offers Nationally, he and his wife have settled in their own little slice of heaven.

Web design is purely a hobbyist affair for Shawn. When his budding interest in knives brought him in contact with some Maine artisan's and custom knife makers, Shawn was asked if he might be interested in putting up a cost effective web presence for a number of those same folks. Shawn has done admirably in bringing you this website, and allowing us to bring to you our philosophy and our products. Thanks Shawn.
