Welcome to Downeast Knife Company

Welcome to Downeast Knife Company.
DKC is founded by two Maine Custom Knife Makers; Lamont Coombs Jr. and Scott Tanguay.
We are proud to begin offering knives in Sprint Runs. Sprint Runs are limited runs of a particular knife, usually in quantities of 50 or less. Each Sprint Run will be a limited quantity, and then those that prove to be good sellers will either be offered as an orderable single item or additional runs will be done at a later date. Our first two runs are shown below. Please have a look and let us know what you think.

Downeast Maine is the name given to the mid-coast region of our state, the area where we live, and where our company will be located. Like the people of this region, our knives will be simple, hardworking, tough, and practical. Gimmicks don't cut it around here where the majority of the people struggle to make their living on the water, in the woods, in the paper and lumber mills, or in the potato and blueberry fields. We are building knives that will feel equally at home on the belt of a lobsterman, a Registered Maine Guide, a logger, a game warden, the kid next door who just got deployed to Iraq, or the average guy during deer or moose season.

Based on that Maine heritage and work ethic, we have started with the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to own a 100% American Made custom knife at an affordable price. Towards that goal, we have sought out, and are collaborating with some of the best Maine Craftsman and a number of Nationally known knife Artisans to bring you our first offering. Notably, our blade heat treating will be performed by Paul Bos, the Master Heat Treater that handles most of Buck Knives Signature and Pro lines.

Lamont, Scott, and the rest of our team promise to put our combined experiences together to produce the very best knives and sheaths we can. Our commitment is to quality, value, and customer satisfaction. We promise that these knives will cut like the dickens and Stay Sharp!

We have put a great deal of thought into the small things as well.
We have been asked, "Why Slot Pins and not Hex?"
Most people we know (sportsman, fisherman, farmers, military, law enforcement) either carry a Leatherman, Swiss army knife, or something with a flat screwdriver on it. We didn't want someone to have to go find that "special tool" for replacing their grips.

As long as there is a Downeast Knife Company, our knives will ALWAYS be 100% MADE IN THE USA! This is of the utmost importance to us, as we have both had friends and family members lose their jobs due to local companies moving out of the country.

Our first offering is called the DK Companion. We believe it to be a very practical design.

  • Lamont and Scott will be handling the blade particulars on the hollow ground 3.5" drop point blade constructed of 1/8" D2 steel (various blade finishes and coatings available), interchangeable micarta grips, thumb ramp, and lanyard hole.
  • Scott will make the kydex sheaths, and we are very fortunate to have another good friend and neighbor, Chris Kravitt, of Treestump Leather, doing our leather sheaths.
  • Paul Rohaly, of Rohaly Cutlery, another friend and fellow engineer, has helped us with the design, our insignia, and the many CAD drawings necessary.
  • Paul Bos will perform our heat treating on this first run of 100 knives.
